Getting started with MeshCore
From unboxing to your first message in 15 minutes. No technical knowledge required.
MeshCore might seem technical, but setting it up is surprisingly simple. With this guide, you'll have a working device within fifteen minutes and be able to send messages to others in your area.
You don't need a radio licence, no monthly fees, and no technical background. Just a small device, a phone, and some curiosity.
What do you need?
Four things to get started with MeshCore:
A LoRa device
A MeshCore-compatible device like the Heltec V3 (from Β£20) or T-Deck (Β£70). Small, portable, and lasts days on a single charge.
A smartphone
Android or iPhone with Bluetooth. This runs the MeshCore app where you send and receive messages.
A computer with Chrome
To flash the firmware you use the web flasher. This only works in Chrome or Edge via WebUSB.
A USB cable
To connect your device to the computer for flashing and charging. Usually USB-C.
Get started in 5 steps
Follow this guide and you'll be on the mesh network in no time:
Buy a device
Order a MeshCore-compatible LoRa device. For beginners we recommend the Heltec V3: affordable, compact, and does everything you need.
Check our devices page for more options and where to buy them.
Flash the firmware
Go to flasher.meshcore.co.uk in Chrome. Connect your device via USB, select your device type, and choose the "BLE Companion" firmware. Click Flash and wait until it's done.
Choose "EU/UK (Narrow)" as preset - this is the standard for the UK and Europe.
Download the MeshCore app
Install the free MeshCore app on your phone. Available in the App Store (iOS) and Play Store (Android).
The app is free. There are optional premium features, but you don't need those as a beginner.
Pair via Bluetooth
Open the app, turn on your device, and tap "Add Device". The app will automatically find your device. Select it and wait for pairing to complete.
Grant the app Bluetooth permission when asked.
Send your first message
Done! You're now on the mesh network. Go to the Public channel to see who's online. Introduce yourself and send your first message.
Don't worry if you don't see anyone - there might not be other nodes nearby yet.
Tips for beginners
Test outside
LoRa works best outdoors. Walls and buildings significantly weaken the signal.
Height helps
The higher your device, the further your range. A window on the top floor already works much better than ground level.
Charge fully
Always start with a full battery. First charge takes 2-3 hours.
Be patient with range
In the city your range is limited (hundreds of metres). With a repeater or higher location you can reach kilometres.

Default is good
As a beginner you're best off using the default settings. Adjust later when you want more.
Important: choose the right preset
Always use the preset "EU/UK (Narrow)" in the UK and Europe. With a different preset you'll end up on a different network and won't see other users. This is the most common mistake for beginners!
