Respuestas rápidas a preguntas comunes sobre MeshCore

What is MeshCore?
MeshCore is open-source firmware for LoRa devices that lets you set up a decentralized mesh network. Messages are forwarded from device to device, without needing internet or cell towers. It is designed for reliable communication, even when all other networks are down.
What do I need to get started?
You need two things: a LoRa radio (starting around €45) and the free MeshCore app on your phone (Android or iOS). The app connects via Bluetooth to your radio and lets you send messages. That is all!
How much does it cost?
An entry-level model like the Heltec V3 costs around €45. More luxurious devices with built-in screen and keyboard (like the T-Deck) cost around €95. The app is free and there are no subscription fees. Once purchased, you have no ongoing costs.
How far does the signal reach?
In built-up areas you can reach directly about 500 meters to 2 kilometers. In open fields with line of sight, this can go up to 10+ kilometers. The beauty of mesh: messages can hop via multiple devices, making your range much larger.
Does it work without internet?
Yes, that is exactly the point! MeshCore works completely without internet, WiFi or mobile networks. The devices communicate directly with each other via radio waves. Ideal for situations where normal communication is not available.
Does it work on iPhone and Android?
Yes, the MeshCore companion app is available for both Android and iOS. You can download it for free from the App Store or Google Play Store. The app connects via Bluetooth to your LoRa device.
Why MeshCore and not Meshtastic?
MeshCore uses smart routing: it first finds the best path to the receiver before sending a message. Meshtastic uses "flooding" where each message is sent to all devices. MeshCore is therefore more efficient and scales better with larger networks. Both have their advantages - you can use the same hardware for both.
Is it difficult to set up?
No, it is surprisingly simple. Install the app, pair your radio via Bluetooth, and you can start. Most devices come with MeshCore already installed. Otherwise you can easily flash the firmware via a web browser at flasher.meshcore.co.
How secure is MeshCore?
MeshCore has built-in encryption. Your private messages are end-to-end encrypted and can only be read by the recipient. Group messages and public channels are not encrypted. You have full control over who you communicate with.
What is a repeater?
A repeater is a MeshCore device that runs 24/7 and forwards messages. It strengthens the network by receiving messages and forwarding them to other devices. The more repeaters, the better the coverage. A repeater at height (attic, roof) can enormously improve the range in the entire neighborhood.
Can I send messages without others nearby?
You need other MeshCore users or repeaters within range to forward messages. In built-up areas this is often within 1-2 kilometers. If there are no other nodes, you can only communicate with people you can reach directly.
How can I help the network grow?
The best way is by placing a repeater at a high location, such as your attic or roof. You can also tell others about MeshCore. The more people join, the stronger the network becomes. Every new node makes the network more robust.
When would I need MeshCore?
MeshCore is ideal during power outages, natural disasters, festivals, or other situations where internet and telephony fail. Also handy for outdoor activities where there is no coverage, such as hiking, sailing or camping. Or just as a hobby to experiment with mesh networks.
How long does the battery last?
This depends on the device and usage. Most portable devices last several days to a week on a charge. With power-saving settings you can extend this. Solar-powered repeaters can run for months or years without intervention.
Is there a community?
Yes! There is an active international community on Discord where you can get help, share experiences and meet other enthusiasts. In the Netherlands and Belgium there are also local Telegram groups for MeshCore users.
Can I get help with installation?
Certainly! The community loves to help. You can go to Discord for direct help, or check out the extensive guides on this site. Most problems are quickly solved with a few tips from experienced users.
Which device should I buy?
For beginners the LilyGo T-Deck Plus is ideal: complete handheld with screen and keyboard. Budget option is the Heltec V3 (buy the complete kit with case and antenna). For repeaters the Seeed SenseCAP P1 Pro is the best choice. Check our devices page for all options.
Can I build my own device?
Yes, if you are technically inclined. You need an ESP32 microcontroller and a LoRa module (868 MHz for Europe). There are many schematics and guides available. But for most people a ready-made device is more convenient and often not much more expensive.
Is MeshCore a replacement for internet?
No, MeshCore is intended for emergency communication and situations without normal connectivity. You can only send short text messages, not visit websites or stream videos. See it as a robust alternative for when other means of communication do not work.
Do I need a license to broadcast?
No! MeshCore uses the 868 MHz ISM band, which is free to use in Europe without a license. Just make sure you buy a device with the correct frequency (868 MHz for Europe, not 915 MHz which is for America).
Which preset should I use?
In the Netherlands and the rest of Europe you use the "EU/UK (Narrow)" preset at 868 MHz. This is required to communicate with other nodes in the network. Other presets (like US) do not work together with the European network.
