Which device do you need?

From pocket-sized to weatherproof: explore your options

To use MeshCore, you need a LoRa device. You pair it via Bluetooth with your phone and then you can send messages off-grid. There are different types: portable devices for on the go, DIY boards for makers, and outdoor repeaters to extend the network.

Important: Always buy a device with the correct frequency. Europe uses 868 MHz, North America uses 915 MHz.

Frequently asked questions

What should I consider when choosing?
Three things: will you mainly use it at home or on the go? Do you want a display on the device itself? And how much do you want to spend? For home use a Heltec V3 is great, for mobile use the Heltec T114 with colour display is nicer.
What's the difference between a companion and a repeater?
A companion is your personal device that you pair via Bluetooth with your phone. A repeater is installed in a fixed location and forwards messages from others. You can use the same device for both, depending on which firmware you install.
Do these devices also work with Meshtastic?
Yes, most devices support both MeshCore and Meshtastic. You can choose which firmware to install. They use different protocols though, so devices with different firmware cannot communicate with each other.
How far can these devices reach?
In the city a few hundred metres to a kilometre. Outside with clear line of sight that can increase to tens of kilometres. A repeater at height greatly extends the range. The beauty of mesh is that messages can hop through multiple devices.
Do I need to buy an external antenna?
For normal use the included antenna is fine. If you want more range, a longer antenna helps (868/915 MHz, pay attention to the correct connector). For a fixed repeater in the attic or outside a good antenna is definitely recommended.
